(Hong Kong, 24th August, 2018) After eight years of planning, planting, winemaking and ageing, Rathfinny Wine Estate are very proud to announce the Hong Kong release of their first Sussex Sparkling wines; a Blanc de Blancs 2014 and a Rosé Brut 2015, following their launch in the UK earlier in June this year.
Rathfinny Wine Estate was established in 2010 by Mark and Sarah Driver, on the site of a working arable farm, and is now producing Sussex Sparkling wines that rival the best Traditional Method sparkling wines in the world. Rathfinny’s first Sussex Sparkling wines, produced conforming to the strict Sussex PDO guidelines, which ensure provenance as well as quality, were bottled in early 2015, and launched for the very first time at Somerset House (London) on 24th April, and officially released to the trade on the 1st June. Now, these much anticipated wines will be making their Hong Kong debut this September.
Brand Ambassador Rob Buckhaven said. “We’re very proud of our first sparkling wines and of the feedback we have received about them from the UK trade. To be launching onto the world stage at such a pivotal moment in the trajectory of English sparkling wines is beyond exciting. Our 2014 Blanc de Blancs, made from one hundred percent Chardonnay, has been aged for thirty-six months on the yeast lees. It has wonderful aromas of peach on the nose, with a delicate citrus-fresh palate.” He added that “The 2015 Rathfinny Rosé has a stunning light-coral tone, a nose of Chantilly cream-drizzled strawberries and a long, elegant peachy finish.”
Mark Driver, Co-Owner of Rathfinny, explained that, “It’s taken eight years of hard work to get to this point. It’s just fantastic to be able to share our first sparkling wines with everyone. The wines are a superb reflection of our fantastic terrior. We want to thank everyone who has worked so hard over the last eight years to get us to this point. It’s been worth it.”
As well a wine producer the Estate is a popular destination for visitors, walkers and wine enthusiasts, offering wine tastings and organised Vineyard tours from the Winery, as well as a delicious offering of modern British seasonal food from their newly opened Tasting Room restaurant.
Sarah Driver, Co-Owner of Rathfinny, explains why having a restaurant on the Estate matters, by saying “We’ve been lucky enough to travel extensively and have been so impressed by what some wineries are doing, particularly in New World regions like the Margaret River, the Mornington Peninsula and Stellenbosch. The tourism side really came as a lightbulb moment whilst visiting wineries in South Africa, where it’s about so much more than just making wine. The overall experience is what counts, and the food offering is a major part of that. From that point, a smart restaurant in the heart of the Winery was always high up our wish list.”
In addition, the Flint Barns provide wonderful ‘home from home’ accommodation and hosts sumptuous Sunday lunches.
Accessible directly from London and Gatwick International airport in less than an hour, Sussex has some incredible experiences to offer, including Glyndebourne Opera, Brighton, the Seven Sister’s country park, South Downs National Park and numerous renowned art galleries and gardens.
Sarah Driver, who was brought up in Hong Kong said: “The world of wine is as much about providing a great experience as about producing fantastic wines and that’s what we aim to give everyone that visits the Rathfinny Wine Estate.”
With renowned winemaker Jonathan Médard from Épernay, and Cameron Roucher from New Zealand managing the Estate, Rathfinny looks set to achieve quality levels that will see their Sussex Sparkling wines winning awards the world over.
Rathfinny’s first sparkling wines, a Blanc de Blancs and a Rosé will be officially released in Hong Kong on the 4th September 2018, targeting premium restaurants bars, and venues across the city. A plan for further international export will see Rathfinny selling up to 50 per cent of its production to key overseas markets within Europe, Asia and North America.
Rathfinny Wines are distributed by Jebsen Fine Wines in Hong Kong.
